What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a form of advanced exfoliation which is safely performed by a certified skin care therapist using a specialized surgical blade to gently abrade 2 to 3 weeks of expired keratinized epidermal skin cells along with vellus hair (peach fuzz).

What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a fabulous treatment for anti-aging results reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation as well as pore size, acne scars and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). The skin will feel amazingly smooth, tighter and brighter allowing treatment serums to penetrate much deeper so they work better. You get the added benefit of a peach-fuzz free complexion. Results are cumulative with each 4 week consecutive treatment.
Contraindications For Dermaplaning
Cancer, sunburn, windburn, diabetes, blood coagulation disorders, taking blood thinners or high doses or frequent use of aspirin, active cold sores, severe active acne breakout, Accutane or Isotretinoin, Retin-A, inflamed, swollen, peeling or bruised skin, recent painful dental work including surgery or braces, prone to keloid scarring or pigment easily due to skin inflammation.
Important Things to Consider Before Dermaplaning
- Accutane or Isotretinoin – Must wait 12 months and supply a doctor’s note.
- Retin-A or Similar Prescription – Discontinue 7 days before and after treatment.
- Botox and Cosmetic Fillers – Wait one week after injections.
- Laser and IPL Treatments – Wait 2 weeks.
- Chemical Peels – Must wait 2 weeks or longer depending on depth of peel.
- Microdermabrasion – Wait 1 to 2 weeks depending on treatment.
- Facial Waxing – Minimal facial waxing of non-vellus hair such as eyebrows and sideburns may be waxed and areas avoided with dermaplaning.
Skin of Color
Or those skin types easily prone to PIH-Post inflammatory Hyperpigmentation are urged to prep skin for at least 2 to 3 weeks (longer for darker skin) before treatment and after with skin lightening products containing tyrosinase inhibitors like Kojic Acid, Bearberry Extract, Licorice Root Extract or Alpha-Arbutin. These ingredients will help to suppress melanocyte activity which could be triggered by an inflammatory response during this skin treatment. A post-peel balm or cream is also recommended for 5-days after treatment. This product should have soothing anti-inflammatory ingredients like 1% Hydrocortisone, Alantoin, Panthenol, Squalane, Azuline, Calendula or aloe Vera.
Important Post Dermaplaning Treatment information
- Sun Exposure – Avoid as much as possible, Apply SPF30 daily or higher if outside reappling every 2 hours, wear a large brimmed hat and stay in the shade, including cloudy days.
- Retin A – Wait 5 days.
- Facial Waxing – Wait 1 week.
- Avoid for at least the first 24-48 hours – Swimming in pools, Excessive Heat - wash with cool or tepid water, avoid heavy workouts, saunas and steam rooms stay cool on hot days to avoid sweat thriving bacteria which can cause irritation.

The face and neck will be double-cleansed, prepped with a mild AHA/BHA solution and a non-comedogenic facial oil to provide hydration and comfort for efficient blade glide. A gentle gommage-enzyme exfoliant containing plant botanical extracts, antioxidants and micronutrients will be applied to calm and further exfoliate residual dead skin creating added brightness.
